The
Ontario Lung Screening Program (OLSP) is an organized lung cancer screening program for people at high risk of getting lung cancer.
How to Refer Patients to the OLSP:
People may qualify for lung cancer screening if they meet the following inclusion criteria:
- Are 55 to 74 years old, and
- A current or former smoker who smoked cigarettes every day for at least 20 years (not necessarily 20 years in a row, which means there could be times when they did not smoke)
Not everyone who meets the referral inclusion criteria will be eligible for lung cancer screening in the program. Determining eligibility is a two-step process.
Step 1:
- Primary care providers refer patients who meet the referral inclusion criteria to an OLSP site hospital.
- People can also contact the Ontario Lung Screening Program site hospital on their own to have their age and smoking history criteria assessed.
Step 2:
- The OLSP site hospital screening navigator will conduct a telephone risk assessment with anyone who meets the age and smoking history criteria in step 1.
- The results of the risk assessment in step 2 determine whether someone is eligible to get screened for lung cancer through the program.
Only people who meet the criteria in steps 1 and 2 will be eligible to get screened for lung cancer through the program.
Access the OLSP referral form here. Completed referral forms can be faxed to the OLSP at UHN: 416-340-4137. The screening Referral Form authorizes the initial scan as well as all annual and recall LDCTs and referral to the Lung Cancer Rapid Assessment and Management Program (LungRAMP), if required.
Communications to Providers:
Referrals require a primary care provider to be identified. Referring primary care providers are provided with the following information:
- Notification if a referred participant is ineligible for or declines screening
- A standardized radiology report of the LDCT results
- Notification if a participant is referred to the LungRAMP at UHN
